Antibiotics
Responsible use of antibiotics in the broiler sector
Health and welfare are paramount for broilers. Good housing, management and preventive measures keep animals healthy and minimise the use of antibiotics.
Since the start of the national reduction plan in 2009, antibiotic use in broilers has fallen by 85%. The use of antibiotics that are crucial for human healthcare has also been significantly reduced.
In recent years, use has fallen further. By 2024, antibiotic use will have fallen by 16% compared to 2023.
The sector continues to strictly monitor responsible prescribing by veterinarians and continuously monitors usage. This joint approach shows that it is possible to keep antibiotic use structurally low without compromising animal welfare and food safety.
